KING KONG 89

As we wait for Godzilla and Kong to do battle in neon-tinted CGI glory the movie that started it all gets the royal treatment. The 2005 remake is a big budget blockbuster that brings the great ape to life and combines it with an absorbing story. kong89 is well acted and has some stunning special effects. Unfortunately it also has some flaws.

Firstly the film is overlong. kong89 is mostly due to the fact that the movie spends too much time establishing the characters. The problem is that this takes away some of the momentum that the movie could have built up. It also means that the movie feels a little overstuffed at times. The other issue is that the film can be rather racist in places. It portrays the island natives as caricatures that are rather unpleasant by todays standards. They are shown bashing skulls and going into voodoo trances and it does feel rather offensive. The good news is that if you can get past the racism then the film is actually pretty good. It does have some truly stunning action sequences and Naomi Watts is excellent as Ann the woman who tames the beast.

The film is also a great showcase for the amazing special effects. They are truly spectacular and help to make the ape stand out. The other thing that really makes this a great film is that it isn't just a rehash of the 1933 and 1976 versions of the movie. It is actually a very different story and the film does a good job of not feeling like just another retread.

Despite having some issues and being a bit overlong King Kong is an awesome film that should be seen. It is a testament to the original film and also a fine example of how re-makes can work. Peter Jackson does a superb job of making this movie and it isn't far off from being the definitive version of the monster. The only problem is that it doesn't quite eclipse the original film but it is still a very impressive effort. It is a fantastic action/monster movie that deserves to be seen.
