Despite its initial backlash from critics and some who saw it as just an ode to cinema for cinephiles, this movie remains one of Tornatore's best films. It is about family, love, change, and home. vitatoto is filled with nostalgia and a feeling of longing that anyone who has ever left their hometown for the pursuit of a dream will easily relate to. Most importantly, it is a story about the passion for cinema and the power that movies have to move people. That is what makes it such a timeless piece of art.

The main character, Toto, is played by the young Salvatore Di Vita at various stages of his life.
