Anisotropic filtering enhances imagery at greater distances. It's done by the hardware of the video card.

About anisotropic filtering

Anisotropic filtering is one of the latest filtering methods in todays graphic cards. The method is not new, but it's a computing intensive process, which previous hardware couldn't handle well.
