Cannon operation

The cannon can be aimed at a target using 3 methods. These methods follows the target acquisition systems:

  • HMS
  • EOS (FLIR / DTV / periscope)
  • (ground) RADAR

Note the gun trail, which is heading in the direction of the aim of the current selected system.

Proper lasing

Gravitational force do apply to cannon bullets, i.e. bullets will fall short at longer distances. To compensate for the amount of bullet drop the cannon has to alter its aim (somewhat higher). Hereby the value of distance is most important to have. There are 3 ways to gain a distance value over a target.

method accuracy
  • triangulation
highly inaccurate
  • obtained RADAR distance
accurate
  • obtained LASER distance
very accurate

The first method used by the helicopter is triangulation. Hereby it gauges the angle, and obtain a distance by calculations. When selecting RADAR the distance value is more accurate, but it only updates once every radar sweep. LASER can measure the distance so precise it can give the absolute value in meters towards the target. This is often necessary for engagement with cannon rounds.

Example

Step 1

This is a close up of the target
Same target at the practicing distance

Step 2

Without any aiming adjust the bullets just go straight at where the gun cross is aiming.

Step 3

With a valid lock, it trangulation is applied. Rounds are fired at higher pitch, but still falling short.

Step 4

With a valid lock, and proper lasing the target is hit. The pitch is even greater (to compensate for the bullet drop).
Last situation as seen from outside perspective.
