The city of Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. It is located at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the Sofia Valley and is surrounded by the Balkan Mountains to its north and east. The area's geographical position makes it one of the highest capital cities in Europe – its altitude is 1,340 metres (4,700 ft).

The climate in Sofia is continental with mild winters and warm summers. The hottest month is July with an average temperature of 21°C and the coldest is January with an average temperature of -1°C. Average annual precipitation is 660 millimetres (24.8 in).

After the fall of Communism in 1989, the city's architectural appearance changed dramatically. In addition to museums, the city also has many theatres and cultural centres. The Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the oldest in the world, is based here. The city's Opera and Ballet are also well-known. The city is also a centre for art, with many galleries and museums.

The city has a good selection of hotels and other accommodation. Many of these are situated within the city centre. Others are in the surrounding suburban areas. The most popular hotel in Sofia is the Renaissance, which is located near the city's central railway station. Other highly rated hotels include the Grand Hotel Sofia, the Four Seasons and the Intercontinental. The city also has a large number of restaurants, some of which offer fine dining and others that cater to budget travellers. There are also a number of nightclubs and other entertainment venues. For those who want to get away from the city, there are a number of beaches nearby. Some of the best beaches are located at Sunny Beach and Golden Sands. These are popular with both locals and tourists alike. The beaches are also a great place to enjoy some water sports. There are also a number of nature reserves in the vicinity of Sofia. These are a good place to relax and take in the beautiful scenery. Many of these are also ideal for hiking, cycling and horse riding.
