The capital city of Bulgaria, Sofia is situated in a valley between Vitosha Mountain and the Balkan Mountains. времето софия is influenced by its continental location and by the nearby Black Sea coast, with cold winters and hot summers. It has a high level of precipitation, especially in spring and summer.

It is home to 49 mineral and thermal springs, some of which have been developed into spa centres. It also has an excellent public transport system with a number of buses and tram lines running on the main thoroughfares, as well as an extensive network of underground and overground railways. The city's many universities and colleges attract a large number of international students from all over the world. The city is the centre of the Bulgarian media industry, with a number of TV and radio stations as well as newspapers, magazines and internet portals. It is also the home of several cultural institutes, including the Russian and Polish cultural institutes, as well as the Instituto Cervantes, Goethe Institut and Institut Francais.

Following the collapse of Communism in 1989, the city experienced rapid growth as the population grew rapidly due to migration from rural areas. The city's streets and buildings were modernised, and the old administrative and centrally planned systems were replaced by an unrestrained boom in construction of office blocks, skyscraper-like business buildings and top-class residential neighbourhoods. The city is also renowned for its 49 parks and green spaces, most of which are named after famous Bulgarian poets.

The city has a diverse range of entertainment venues, from the 43,000-seat Vasil Levski National Stadium, which hosts international football matches and other sporting events, to the smaller indoor Arena Sofia, which hosts concerts by major international artists. There are also a number of theatres, cinemas and art galleries in the city. The most important museums include the National History Museum, the National Art Gallery, the Central Military Museum and the Ethnographic Museum.

A number of events take place in the city throughout the year, including the annual New Year's Eve party at the National Palace and a big open-air concert at the Boyana Square. The city is also a popular shopping destination, with its many malls and stores, as well as a variety of markets and boutiques. The city also has a very active nightlife scene. There are many bars and clubs, some of which are located in historic buildings such as the former St Sofia Cathedral. The newest addition to the city's nightlife is Club Noa, which opened in 2012. It features dance floors and outdoor seating on its balcony overlooking Vitosha Boulevard.
