The term batik (literally “tie-dye”) refers to a process of dyeing cloth with multiple colors using the wax resist technique. The process is a time-consuming one in which the fabric is drawn and dipped in various dyes many times to achieve the desired pattern. The drawing and dipping process takes several days. A specialized skill and patience are needed in this art. The result is a beautiful work of art that can be appreciated for its beauty and craftsmanship as well as its cultural significance.

The Museum Batik Keraton Yogyakarta is a museum in the Palace of Yogyakarta Sultanate that displays thousands of collections of batik. It was founded in 2005 and inaugurated by Sultan Hamengkubuwono X. The museum contains batik collections from a variety of regions in Java such as kawung, grompol, semen, gringsing, nitik, cuwiri, parang and other motifs.
