Both biochemical properties and the architectural features of TE scaffolds are crucial in their design process. Synthetic polymers are attractive biomaterials to be used in the manufacturing of TE scaffolds, due to various advantages, such as being relatively inexpensive, enabling precise reproducibility, possessing tunable mechanical/chemical properties, and ease of processing. However, such scaffolds need modifications to improve their limited interaction with biological tissues. Structurally, multiscale porosity is advantageous over single-scale porosity; therefore, in this study, we have considered two key points in the design of a bone repair material; (i) manufacture of multiscale porous scaffolds made of photocurable polycaprolactone (PCL) by a combination of emulsion templating and three-dimensional (3D) printing and (ii) decoration of these scaffolds with the in vitro generated bone-like extracellular mA new polar and magnetic oxide, LuCrWO6, was synthesized under high pressure (6 GPa) and high temperature (1673 K). LuCrWO6 is isostructural with the previously reported polar YCrWO6 (SG Pna21, no. 33). The ordering of CrO6 and WO6 octahedra in the edge-shared dimers induce the polar structure. The effective size of rare earth, Ln cation does not seem to affect the symmetry of LnCrWO6. Second harmonic generation measurements of LuCrWO6 confirmed the noncentrosymmetric character and strong piezoelectric domains are observed from piezoresponse force microscopy at room temperature. LuCrWO6 exhibits antiferromagnetic behavior, TN, of ∼18 K with a Weiss temperature of -30.7 K.Combining synthetic chemistry and biocatalysis is a promising but underexplored approach to intracellular catalysis. We report a strategy to codeliver a single-chain nanoparticle (SCNP) catalyst and an exogenous enzyme into cells for performing bioorthogonal reactions. The nanoparticle and enzyme reside in endosomes, creating engineered artificial organelles that manufacture organic compounds intracellularly. This system operates in both concurrent and tandem reaction modes to generate fluorophores or bioactive agents. The combination of SCNP and enzymatic catalysts provides a versatile tool for intracellular organic synthesis with applications in chemical biology.A novel method for quickly and quantitatively measuring aqueous lead in drinking water has been developed. A commercially available activated carbon felt has been found to effectively capture lead from tap water, and partnered with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry, it provides quantitative measurement of aqueous lead in drinking water. Specifically, for a 2 L volume of tap water, the linear range of detection was found to be from 1-150 ppb, encompassing the current EPA limit for lead in drinking water (15 ppb). To make a reproducible and easy to use method for filtering, a 2 L bottle cap with a 1.25 cm diameter hole was used for filtering. Utilizing this filtration method, 75 solutions from 0 to 150 ppb lead gave a 91% sensitivity, 97% specificity, and 93% accuracy, and all the misclassified samples fell between 10 and 15 ppb. This method has also proved reliable for detecting calcium as well as several other divalent metals in drinking water including copper, zinc, iron, and manganese.Shape memory polymer (SMP) surfaces with tunable wettability have attracted extensive attention due to their widespread applications. However, there have been rare reports on in situ tuning wettability with SMP materials. In this paper, we reported a kind of distinct superhydrophobic SMP microconed surface on the silver nanowire (AgNW) film to achieve in situ reversible transition between pinned and roll-down states. The mechanism is taking advantage of the in situ heating functionality of the silver nanowire film by voltage, which provides the transition energy for SMP to achieve the fixation and recovery of temporary shape. It is noteworthy that the reversible transition could be repeated many times (>100 cycles), and we quantitatively investigate the shape memory ability of microcones with varied height and space under different applied voltages. These results show that the tilted microcones could recover its original upright state under a small voltage (4-11 V) in a short time, and the shortest recovery tThe insufficient intracellular H2O2 level in tumor cells is closely associated with the limited efficacy of chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Despite tremendous efforts, engineering CDT agents with a straightforward and secure H2O2 supplying ability remains a great challenge. Inspired by the balance of H2O2 generation and elimination in cancer cells, herein, a nanozyme-based H2O2 homeostasis disruptor is fabricated to elevate the intracellular H2O2 level through facilitating H2O2 production and restraining H2O2 elimination for enhanced CDT. In the formulation, the disruptor with superoxide dismutase-mimicking activity can convert O2•- to H2O2, promoting the production of H2O2. Simultaneously, the suppression of catalase activity and depletion of glutathione by the disruptor weaken the transformation of H2O2 to H2O. Thus, the well-defined system could perturb the H2O2 balance and give rise to the accumulation of H2O2 in cancer cells. The raised H2O2 level would ultimately amplify the Fenton-like reaction-based CDT eAn understanding of the response of nanomaterials to specific environmental parameters is an essential prerequisite for their practical use, especially in living systems. Herein, we disclose the preparation of a water-soluble nanocluster Au16(SR)12 (SR denotes deprotonated captopril) and its characterization by a combination of theoretical (e.g., density functional theory calculations) and experimental (UV-vis, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, etc.) methods. Interestingly, Au16(SR)12 was found to convert to Au18(SR)14 under acidic conditions, while the reverse conversion from Au18(SR)14 to Au16(SR)12 occurred upon the addition of base. A mechanistic investigation determined this pH regulation to originate from the distinct steric and electrostatic properties of these two clusters. This study is the first to report the susceptibility of Au18(SR)14 and Au16(SR)12 to pH, and the distinct pH stability unambiguously reveals the importance of size-tracking of nanomaterials in living systems for future cliIn the present study, we aimed to characterize gut microbiome and develop a gut microbiome-based diagnostic model in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Prospectively, we collected 309 fecal samples from Central China and Northwest China and carried out the sequencing of the V3-V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene. The gut microbiome was characterized, and microbial biomarkers were identified in 152 CAD patients and 105 healthy controls (Xinjiang cohort, n = 257). Using the biomarkers, we constructed a diagnostic model and validated it externally in 34 CAD patients and 18 healthy controls (Zhengzhou cohort, n = 52). Fecal microbial diversity was increased in CAD patients compared to that in healthy controls (P = 0.021). Phylum Bacteroidetes was increased in CAD patients versus healthy controls (P = 0.001). Correspondingly, 48 microbial markers were identified through a 10-fold cross-validation on a random forest model, and an area under the curve (AUC) of 87.7% (95% CI 0.832 to 0.916, P less then 0.001)Ribose-5-phosphate isomerase B is of great importance for biocatalysis and biosynthesis, but the multifunctional residues in active sites hinder the research efforts. This study employed rational design strategies to locate the key residues of RpiB from Ochrobactrum sp. CSL1 (OsRpiB). A single-mutant S9T of a noncontact residue showed 80% activity improvement toward d-allose. A double-mutant S98H/S134H further increased the activity to 3.6-fold. The mutations were analyzed by kinetics and molecular dynamics analyses, indicating that S9T might enhance the substrate binding and catalysis by inducing a steric effect, and S98H/S134H could strengthen both ring opening and binding of d-allose. Though S98H/S134H showed low temperature stability, its potential was explored by isomerizing d-allose to d-psicose with higher conversion and in less reaction time. The findings of this study were beneficial for illustrating the complex functions of key residues in RpiBs and applying OsRpiB in preparing rare sugars. In this study, a novel metal oxide, lanthanum nickelate (LNO) with a perovskite structure, was introduced into a polymer solar cell (PSC) device, replacing the PEDOTPSS hole transport layer (HTL). The results show that the LNO-based PTB7-ThPC71BM solar cell exhibits a higher circuit current density, power conversion efficiency, and stability compared with a device with PEDOTPSS HTL. To understand the effect of LNO HTL on the performance of devices, the active layer morphology and charge transport characteristics in PSCs were systematically analyzed. The morphology of active layer was affected by the HTL, which further regulated the generation and transport processes of charge carrier in the PSC device. For the LNO HTL, an appropriate thickness (8 nm) and a small surface roughness (Sq = 0.7 nm) can coordinate the energy-level structure of device and improve the interface contact between the FTO electrode and PTB7-ThPC71BM active layer, promoting the charge transport performance of device. Therefore, this work Surface micro- and nano-patterning techniques are often employed to enhance the optical interface to single photoluminescent emitters in diamond, but the utility of such surface structuring in applications requiring ensembles of emitters is still open to investigation. Here, we demonstrate scalable and fault-tolerant fabrication of closely packed arrays of fluorescent diamond nanopillars, each hosting its own dense, uniformly bright ensemble of near-surface nitrogen-vacancy centers. We explore the optimal sizes for these structures and realize enhanced spin and photoluminescence properties resulting in a 4.5 times increase in optically detected magnetic resonance sensitivity when compared to unpatterned surfaces. Utilizing the increased measurement sensitivity, we image the mechanical stress tensor in each diamond pillar across the arrays and show that the fabrication process has a negligible impact on in-built stress compared to the unpatterned surface. Our results represent a valuable pathway toward future Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is a catechin found in green tea that can inhibit the amyloid formation of a wide variety of proteins. EGCG's ability to prevent or redirect the amyloid formation of so many proteins may reflect a common mechanism of action, and thus, greater molecular-level insight into how it exerts its effect could have broad implications. Here, we investigate the molecular details of EGCG's inhibition of the protein β-2-microglobulin (β2m), which forms amyloids in patients undergoing long-term dialysis treatment. Using size-exclusion chromatography and a collection of mass spectrometry-based techniques, we find that EGCG prevents Cu(II)-induced β2m amyloid formation by diverting the normal progression of preamyloid oligomers toward the formation of spherical, redissolvable aggregates. EGCG exerts its effect by binding with a micromolar affinity (Kd ≈ 5 μM) to the β2m monomer on the edge of two β-sheets near the N-terminus. This interaction destabilizes the preamyloid dimer and prevents thVariability in consumer practices and choices is typically not addressed in comparisons of environmental impacts of traditional shopping and e-commerce. Here, we developed a stochastic model to quantify the variability in the greenhouse gas (GHG) footprints of product distribution and purchase of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs) via three prevalent retail channels in the United Kingdom (U.K.). We found that shopping via bricks and clicks (click and fulfillment via physical store delivery) most likely decreases the GHG footprints when substituting traditional shopping, while FMCGs purchased through pure players with parcel delivery often have higher GHG footprints compared to those purchased via traditional retail. The number of items purchased and the last-mile travel distance are the dominant contributors to the variability in the GHG footprints of all three retail channels. We further showed that substituting delivery vans with electric cargo bikes can lead to a GHG emission reduction of 26% via parcel deThe development of strain sensors with high sensitivity and stretchability, which can accurately detect different human activities such as subtle physiological signals and large-scale joint motions is essential for disease diagnosis and human health monitoring. However, achieving both high sensitivity and stretchability is still an enormous challenge at the moment, particularly for intrinsically stretchable strain sensors. Herein, utilizing large differences in the conductivity and stretchability of micropatterned Au and SWCNTs, we present an ultrasensitive intrinsically stretchable strain sensor by a one-step photolithography process. Its high sensitivity is inspired from spiders' slit organ and the high stretchability is enlightened from spiders' neural pathway. The skin-like sensor exhibits many superior merits, including ultrahigh sensitivity (gauge factors of 7.1 × 104 to 3.4 × 106), wide detection range (up to 100% strain), excellent durability (1000 cycles), ultralow limit of detection (0.1% strain), fStudies of firefighters have shown increased exposures to carcinogenic compounds and elevated rates of certain cancers compared to the general population, yet this research has focused almost exclusively on men. To address this gap, the Women Firefighters Biomonitoring Collaborative created a biological sample archive and analyzed levels of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) among women firefighters (N = 86) and office workers (N = 84) in San Francisco. Serum samples were collected and analyzed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to measure and compare PFAS levels between firefighters and office workers. 7 of 12 PFAS congeners were detected in the least 70% of the study population, and 4 congeners were detected in 100% of participants. In regression models comparing PFAS levels by occupation and adjusting for potential confounders, firefighters had higher geometric mean concentrations of PFAS compared to office workers PFHxS (2.22 (95% CI = 1.55, 3.18)), PFUnDA (1.83 (95% CI = 0.97, Instrument-free, portable, and direct read-out mini-devices have wider application prospects in various fields, especially for real-time/on-site sensing. The platform proved the feasibility for visual quantitative detection of pesticide via a fluorescence "on-off-on" response with a single dual-emissive ratiometric paper strip. Red-emitting CdTe quantum dots (rQDs) were embedded into the silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) as an internal reference, while blue-emitting carbon dots (bCDs) as a signal report unit were covalently linked to the outer surface of SiO2 NPs. The blue fluorescence could be quenched by gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and then recovered with pesticide. Herein, a novel magnetic poly(allylamine)-modified graphene oxide (GO@PAA@Fe3O4) was synthesized as extraction sorbent, followed by high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry HPLC-MS/MS. As a surface modifier of GO, the introduction of PAA and Fe3O4 provided more adsorption sites for IAA and IPA, mainly through the generation of H-bonding sites. Moreover, modified by an activation step, the capacity of the activated GO@PAA@Fe3O4 for the adsorption of IAA and IPA was 2.1-3.4 times higher than that of unactivated material. The adsorptions of IAA and IPA on GO@PAA@Fe3O4 were fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm, respectively. Under the optimal conditions, IAA and IPA were determined in 16-base SAB for the first time, and their concentrationsWe reported a soft-stiff hybridized polymeric film that can self-morph to dedicated three-dimensional (3D) structures for application in acoustic metamaterials. The hybridized film was fabricated by laterally adhering a soft and responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel to stiff and passive SU-8 patterns. Upon thermal stimulation, deformation of the tough PNIPAM hydrogel was locally constrained by the stiff SU-8 patterns, thereby causing laterally nonuniform strain to their interfaces for mechanically buckling the hybridized films to 3D structures. Combined with finite element analysis, we demonstrated that the stiff SU-8 patterns effectively alleviated the uncontrollability and uncertainty during the self-morphing process, which was caused by unexpected mutual deformation between the active and passive domains in the self-morphing materials. Therefore, deterministic self-buckling to dedicated 3D structures was physically realized such as a wave-shaped peak-valley structure, 3D checkerboard patSubstantial progress has been made in the experimental synthesis of large-area two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) thin films in recent years. This has provided a solid basis to build non-planar structures to implement the unique electrical and mechanical properties of TMDs in various nanoelectronic and mechano-electric devices, which, however, has not yet been fully explored. In this work, we demonstrate the fabrication and characterization of MoS2 field-effect transistors (FETs) with an omega (Ω)-shaped gate. The FET is built based on the SiO2/MoS2 core-shell heterostructure integrated using atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique. The MoS2 thin film has been uniformly deposited by ALD as wrapping the SiO2 nanowire forming the channel region, which is further surrounded by the gate dielectric and the Ω-gate. The device has exhibited n-type behavior with effective switching comparable to the reference device with a planar MoS2 channel built on a SiO2/Si substrate. Our work opens up an attraWe report the fabrication and electrical characterization of germanium arsenide (GeAs) field-effect transistors with ultrathin channels. The electrical transport is investigated in the 20-280 K temperature range, revealing that the p-type electrical conductivity and the field-effect mobility are growing functions of temperature. An unexpected peak is observed in the temperature dependence of the carrier density per area at ∼75 K. Such a feature is explained considering that the increased carrier concentration at higher temperatures and the vertical band bending combined with the gate field lead to the formation of a two-dimensional (2D) conducting channel, limited to few interfacial GeAs layers, which dominates the channel conductance. The conductivity follows the variable-range hopping model at low temperatures and becomes the band-type at higher temperatures when the 2D channel is formed. The formation of the 2D channel is validated through a numerical simulation that shows excellent agreement with the expeBackground The synchronized activity of distributed neural assemblies — reflected in the electroencephalogram (EEG) — underpins mental function. In schizophrenia, modulation deficits of EEG spectral content during a P300 task have been replicated. The effects of treatment, chronicity and specificity in these deficits and their possible relationship with anatomic connectivity remain to be explored. Methods We assessed spectral entropy modulation of the EEG during a P300 task in 79 patients with schizophrenia (of those, 31 werein their first episode), 29 patients with bipolar disorder and 48 healthy controls. Spectral entropy values summarize EEG characteristics by quantifying the irregularity of spectral content. In a subsample, we calculated the network architecture of structural connectivity using diffusion tensor imaging and graph-theory parameters. Results We found significant spectral entropy modulation deficits with task performance in patients with chronic or first-episode schizophrenia and in patients BACKGROUND The aim of this prospective comparative study is to assess the functional outcome in two groups of patients suffering from spinal lumbar instability and treated by decompression and stabilization with posterior lumbar interbody fusion using percutaneous pedicle screws (PCT) or a novel technique of divergent pedicle screws insertion using a cortical bone divergent trajectory (CBT). Functional outcome after surgery has been evaluated using Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Modified Rankin Scale (MRS), Smiley-Webster Scale, and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). METHODS Seventy-two consecutive patients were treated at our department from February 2013 to February 2018 for one-two levels unstable stenosis with one year follow-up. Forty-one patients were treated with percutaneous screws and thirty-one patients were treated with divergent cortical bone trajectory screws. Functional outcome and complications were analysed with logistic regression analysis. No funding was received for this research. With manual retrieval, some ancient historical literature was obtained. Additionally, Yijing Huiyuan Zhenjiu Yuanshu Dou Taishi Michuan Mihua Zhenjing Qiongyao Baojian, written by WU Jia-yan in the Ming Dynasty, collected in Japan, was analyzed. It was found that DOU Han-qing's acupuncture and moxibustion was influenced by Suwen Wangpian Cifalun, the Taoism medicine of the early stage of the Song Dynasty, as well as by Jiaojing Baxue, passed on by SONG Zi-hua, the hermit. DOU Han-qing had been in contact with FAN Zhi-ying of the Taoist, but there was no clear record relevant with medicine. Acupuncture is regarded as a complex individualized intervention, and its characteristics of TCM is difficult to be reflected by strict randomized controlled trials. The registry study provides more possibilities for the data collection of individualized diagnosis and treatment under the guidance of the overall concept and syndrome differentiation, and is more suitable for data management and collection of large samples and multi-center trials in the real-world study. It has become an opportunity to carry out real-world study of acupuncture for MPE. There are many challenges in the registry study of acupuncture for MPE. However, it is of great significance to collect real-world data of acupuncture for MPE to improve the clinical effect of MPE and provide a new clinical research method for acupuncture in tumors and related complications. The characteristics of syndrome differentiation and the experience of professor YI Wei were briefly introduced for the treatment of infertility of ovulation disturbance, including three aspects, named the thought of diagnosis and treatment, the therapeutic method and the acupoint prescription, as well as the clinical case report. Academically, professor YI Wei is deeply influenced by professor JIN Rui, the acupuncture master of Xin'an school and Lingnan school. Regarding the treatment of gynecological diseases, the academic thought of professor LUO Song-ping and ZHANG Yu-zhen is contributed. Professor YI attaches the importance to the syndrome differentiation based on meridian and collateral, supplemented by the syndrome differentiation of zangfu, yinyang, qi and blood, cold and heat, as well as the deficiency and excess. In clinical treatment, the acupoints are selected specially from the conception vessel, the governor vessel, the thoroughfare vessel and the belt vessel. The extra meridians are equally impoProfessor YANG Jun believes that chronic diarrhea is located in the "intestine" and its pathogenesis focuses on the dysfunction of the spleen and the stomach which results in the impairment of qi activity. In the treatment, the comprehensive therapy is adopted, including acupuncture, moxibustion, herbal medicine, cupping method, etc. Regarding acupuncture therapy, Tianshu (ST 25) is selected specially for regulating the spleen and stomach function, Xiabai (LU4) for dispersing the lung qi to stop diarrhea, as well as Yintang (GV 29), Shuigou (GV 26), Chengjiang (CV 24), Qihai (CV 6), Guanyuan (CV 4) and Zhongwan (CV 12) for promoting the circulation of the conception vessel and the governor vessel. Regarding moxibustion therapy, moxibustion is exerted at the abdominal region to regulate qi and blood circulation and unblocking the meridians. Moreover, the retained cupping method is used at Shenque (CV 8) to consolidate the primary qi and the modified sijunzi tang, the herbal decoction is supplemented to tonify Through collecting the 30-year medical experience of professor WANG Fu-chun, the methods of acupuncture manipulation practice were summarized so as to provide the reference for the medical staffs in acupuncture teaching and clinical work. Professor WANG proposes four key elements of acupuncture manipulation practice, i.e. the style of needling practice, the consciousness of needling practice, the strength of needling practice and qi of needling practice. Acupuncture manipulation is a highly operational clinical skill. The knowledge learning from the experience of the instructors is the important way to improve acupuncture techniques. Besides, beginners need to improve their techniques through learning the theories, a large amount of exercises as well as the self-perception.The academic thought of professor CHEN Ri-xin on "no allergy without any deficiency" was explored. Theory and the clinical application were elaborated on allergic diseases treated with heat-sensitive moxibustion. It is believed that the critical pathogenesis of allergic diseases is deficiency, particularly the deficiency of the lung, the spleen and the kidney. The invasion of exogenous factors or the disturbance of the retained pathogens in the body may induce allergy. Regarding the therapeutic method, the warming method is applicable for the deficiency and the heat-sensitization counteracts allergy. The sensitized points are detected in accordance with the two-step location method and they are stimulated with the suspended moxibustion. The feeling of heat-sensitive moxibustion is a sign of activation of endogenous regulatory function in the human body. It is a kind of external therapy for the internal disorders, directly acting on the pathogenesis, strengthening the antipathogenic qi and removing the allergiOBJECTIVE To objectively evaluate the safety of acupoint catgut embedding therapy. RESULTS After 21 days of SIGNIFICANCE Confocal laser scanning enables optical sectioning in clinical fiber bundle endomicroscopes, but lower-cost, simplified endomicroscopes use widefield incoherent illumination instead. Optical sectioning can be introduced in these simple systems using structured illumination microscopy (SIM), a multiframe digital subtraction process. However, SIM results in artifacts when the probe is in motion, making the technique difficult to use in vivo and preventing the use of mosaicking to synthesize a larger effective field of view (FOV). AIM We report and validate an automatic motion compensation technique to overcome motion artifacts and allow generation of mosaics in SIM endomicroscopy. APPROACH Motion compensation is achieved using image registration and real-time pattern orientation correction via a digital micromirror device. We quantify the similarity of moving probe reconstructions to those acquired with a stationary probe using the relative mean of the absolute differences (MAD). We further demonstSIGNIFICANCE Monte Carlo (MC) light transport simulations are most often performed in regularly spaced three-dimensional voxels, a type of data representation that naturally struggles to represent boundary surfaces with curvature and oblique angles. Not accounting properly for such boundaries with an index of refractivity, mismatches can lead to important inaccuracies, not only in the calculated angles of reflection and transmission but also in the amount of light that transmits through or reflects from these mismatched boundary surfaces. AIM A new MC light transport algorithm is introduced to deal with curvature and oblique angles of incidence when simulated photons encounter mismatched boundary surfaces. APPROACH The core of the proposed algorithm applies the efficient preprocessing step of calculating a gradient map of the mismatched boundaries, a smoothing step on this calculated 3D vector field to remove surface roughness due to discretization and an interpolation scheme to improve the handling of curvature.
